ISO 19650 File Naming

What is it?

ISO 19650 file naming: every name is made of fixed parts in the same order, project, originator, volume, level, type, role and number, plus a suitability code such as S2 or A1.

Why it matters

When everyone names files their own way, files get lost and versions get mixed up. One naming scheme lets anyone know a file from its name.

How it works in EDC

The UK annex is the default; the manager turns parts on or off and sets lengths and allowed codes. The name tester says at once whether a name fits, and when naming is strict a wrong name is refused.

Every file is named in the same order: project, originator, volume, level, type, role, number; a wrong name is refused.

  • UK annex by default, editable per project
  • A name tester before upload
  • Suitability codes S0, S1–S4 and A1
